Chat

The workspace AI assistant — conversations, knowledge bases, building workflows, and automations by chat.

Chat (served by the Cortex service) is the workspace AI assistant. Open it from the Chat icon in the left sidebar. Every conversation is persistent, searchable, and scoped to your workspace — you can pick up where you left off across sessions.

Chat is the workspace-wide assistant for open-ended conversations, building things from scratch, and research. For the in-editor assistant that helps you edit a workflow you already have open, see Copilot.

What Chat can do

Ask & research

Multi-turn conversations with full history. Web search and page fetch when the org's search integration is enabled. Code execution in a sandbox. Image generation. Persistent memory that carries across conversations.

Build & automate

Create workflows from a plain-language description, use block recipes, deploy, and trigger from chat. Create and manage automations. Schedule recurring prompts ("remind me every Monday…").

Data & files

Attach files or drag-and-drop documents — they are indexed into a private per-conversation knowledge base automatically. Create and query dynamic tables scoped to your org and workspace. Search org-wide knowledge bases.

Remember & schedule

Persistent memory per user across conversations. Automatic recall of relevant past messages. Scheduled tasks trigger a chat prompt on a cron schedule — no workflow needed.

Model selection

The model selector in the Chat toolbar lists every LLM installed for your org. The available choices depend on your integrations — if your org uses a self-hosted model, a cloud provider, or both, all of them appear here. Workspace-level policy can restrict which models members may select. See Vendors for the full catalogue.

Suggestion pills

When you open a new conversation, Chat shows suggestion pills — quick-start prompts like Build a workflow, Search docs, Create a report, Schedule an automation, Visualize data, and Debug run. Click one to pre-fill the message box.

The first time you open Chat, you'll be asked to accept the conversational AI consent notice. Chat stores your messages and builds semantic embeddings to enable conversation search and automatic recall. You can revoke consent at any time; see Administration for what that removes.

Long conversations

When a conversation grows very long, Chat compacts its own context by summarizing earlier messages. A status note appears inline when this happens. The conversation history in the sidebar is not affected — you can still search and read every message.
